Arthur. How are you feeling about directing our next theatre show?

Excited. Scared. But most of all, just very very grateful to the exec and the production team for granting me such a big opportunity. I don't take the challenge lightly at all and know that it's going to be a lot of work on everyone's part but I'm confident that as long as we remain creative and appreciate the necessity...

OperaWarwick is a society for all those who love opera or are looking for performance and creative production experience at Warwick. We are arguably the most innovative student opera society in the country and are doing more than most professional companies to bring opera right into the 21st Century. We're going through an exciting time following the sell-out successes of the two Mozart masterpieces, The Magic Flute and The Marriage of Figaro and a student translated, completely updated production of  Hansel & Gretel. With our upcoming production of Rossini's Cinderella,...

Interview with Paul Horgan, Priest

As a first year student in his first major role in an opera, there are few stranger ways to be introduced to the medium than by performing in The Magic Flute. The story follows Tamino, a modern day prince on his way to war who is traumatised by the horrors he experiences, and falls into a psychedelic delusion where he must overcome bizarre and fantastic obstacles to rescue the beautiful Pamina, in a world where nothing is what it seems. My character is a high ranking official in a dictatorial government in this strange land, and it is my job to instruct and guide Tamino and his friends in their...

Interview with Papagena, Charlotte Ireland

How are rehearsals are going so far? We’ve had the great fortune of being able to rehearse this opera over a longer period of time than our last production of the Marriage of Figaro.  The whole cast has now spent about 3 months with the music, which means we’ve been able to place a big focus on acting and characterisation.  Our director, Flips Green, has run a lot of useful workshops helping us to access the physicality and mindset of our characters, which definitely gives everyone’s performance an extra dimension. You’re singing Papagena – what are your...

Interview with Sarastro, Tom Sharp

Flips Green, Director: What are your thoughts on our revamp of the original premise of the opera? The new concept, as I understand it, likens Mozart’s great opera to the Wizard of Oz. In the same way it has a domestic opening that plunges the rest of the drama into a fantasy, which makes sense of a lot of the surreal elements of the opera. In the same way, it focuses on the protagonist and friends searching for some sort of fulfilment in what is a metaphor for the crazy modern world (some more suitable for fulfilment than others). And in the same way it focuses on a seemingly...

Interview with Papageno, Sam Lom-Bor

In a term filled with stress and exams for all, one would wonder why on earth we’re putting on a show in the summer term! But here we are, passionate as ever, ready and willing to give our all into what is shaping up to be quite a spectacle here at the Arts Centre on 1st July.
In comparison to other Mozartian operas, The Magic Flute is not often credited for its music in the same light as Don Giovanni or The Marriage of Figaro, but its the story line that really stimulates the audience’s imagination. This whimsical fairy tale has been adapted in an absolutely...
